- Great Trip
Description
This has been a regular trip site for about 20 years. We stay in caravans at the Challaborough Bay Holiday Park, now part of
Parkdean Holiday company. The bay is about 10 miles East of Plymouth. It has a sandy beach with area for boat launching which require using a 4x4 vehicle or the local dive club tractor (arrangement necessary).
Burgh Island is a popular dive site, especially for shallower second dives. Lois Shied is a well broken-up wreck in 6 to 9 meters. The Persier and Oregan are 2 wrecks nearby. Reefs are Hilsea Point Rocks and The Rutts.
When bad weather comes from the south west, we have often travelled to Hallsands (South of Dartmouth) for sheltered diving. Plymouth is another option.
Extra information
The trip was originally Whitsun week, which has the late May bank holiday and is usually half term, so was a chance for family holiday and diving. With decreased family participation and increased half term caravan rental, we have moved the week into June. As it is a week, some people take a day off diving to visit local areas, such as The Eden Centre, Plymouth, or walk on Dartmoor.
Caravans had to be booked in January and the balance paid at Easter. The web page indicates these are now full.
The caravans were £329 for the week, (£539 two weeks before at Bank holiday week!)
The diving was about £13 per dive last year, but depends on total dives in the week and fuel used.
Accomodation
There are 4 caravans booked: Scott family, Wenham family, Willey family and Dave Williams group.
The trip could accommodate more people for diving, but they would need to arrange accommodation in a B&B or local pub
The caravans are not available until 4pm Saturday afternoon (7 June) and must be vacated by 10am 14 June.
Bed linen is supplied for the numbers named for each unit. Towels and other bathroom and kitchen requisites are not supplied – ie washing-up liquid, loo rolls during the week, etc
